90&9:
Your job angle on North American Youth Congress is unique. Tell us what your
responsibilities for NAYC include.
SM:
Anything that involves money, such as honorariums for speakers and staff
members, per diems for all staff, vendor payments, and offering processing and
deposits. Also, I am responsible for all of the hotel, convention center and
arena contracts. These documents are usually about 10 pages long and are full of
fine print. I also serve as the liaison for the GYD to these various facilities.
Registration for the event, both pre-registration and at-the-door fall under my
purview. Basically, all of the non-glamorous stuff. Funny thing is, I like it!
90&9: How do you keep track of it all?
SM:
Files, files and more files. I keep digital files on my CPU, but I also kill
a lot of trees and have extensive physical files.
90&9: Does life actually gets easier for you once NAYC begins?
SM:
Yes, a large portion of my responsibilities are executed prior to the event,
so most of what I do at NAYC is work behind the scenes making adjustments and
paying people.
90&9: Any follow-up NAYC responsibilities for you or is that it?
SM:
My work on NAYC will not conclude until about two months later. It takes
about that long for all of the dust to settle. At that point, I will compile a
thorough financial report of the event.
90&9: So, what’s the first NAYC you attended and what do you remember
from it?
SM:
My first was as a 13-year-old in Tulsa, OK. It was overwhelming to me and
very encouraging at the same time. I came from being the only Pentecostal in my
whole school, to seeing a convention center full of other young people just like
me. It was also the first time that this small town boy got to eat fried cheese.
Who knew that you could fry cheese?
90&9: What’s your favorite NAYC Memory?
SM:
That would probably have to be in 2001 in Atlanta. I was the Youth Pastor at
Atlanta West Pentecostal Church, so NAYC was in our backyard. That was cool, but
what really stands out was the Thursday night service where our group prayed and
lingered in the presence of God until the arena was nearly empty. God totally
transformed the lives of some of my students that night!
90&9: What do you see as the biggest challenge for Apostolic youth today?
SM:
Overcoming apathy. The times are perilous, with wars and rumors of wars, sin
is rampant and the moral fiber of our society is deteriorating; however, all of
this doesn’t seem to jar us from our spiritual slumber. I don’t believe that
we are in a literal age of the Laodiceans, but I do believe that this spirit is
prevalent in our ranks and has to be combated continually.
90&9: (Excluding the Bible and family), I can’t live without…
SM:
Oxygen! No, seriously I’d have to say my Treo cell phone/PDA. It is my
brains and I can’t imagine life without it.
90&9: The last item I downloaded was…
SM:
Hillsong United’s new CD, All of the Above
