The Old Paths

October 8, 2007

By Theresa Huff

Recently my husband and I took a short trip to get away for a few days.  We went to several places “just looking.”  I am an antique lover, although I don't own too many because most of them cost more than I can afford!  I do love to walk around and look, and, in doing so, I saw several things that I had been raised with.  All those years ago, I couldn't wait to get rid of “those old things” and get all the newer, updated versions.  Now I would give my eye-teeth, as the old saying goes, to have them back - not just for their beauty and worth, but for all the wonderful memories they hold.

Sitting here today, the thought came to me that this could apply in the spiritual sense, too.  The prophet said, “Thus saith the Lord, stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16).  The word “old” doesn't just signify that something is worn out. It can also refer to something or someone that is experienced, of long standing, or has been in existence for a comparatively long time.  In thinking of the old ways, ask yourself, “If the old ways worked for our grandparents and great-grandparents, why do we feel it is necessary to change the system?  Why try to improve on the old tried-and-true with the newer ways and ideas?”  There are some things that can never be improved on no matter what we try!

Think about this:  God doesn't change, His paths do not change, and the cost has already been paid, so invest in the tried-and-true and become a part of the family of God.  Stand for the old ways!
