His Yoke is Easy?

October 8, 2007

By Albert Friend

We are God's word in motion.

Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).

In the yoke, you pull with your mind of faith. You work with your hands.

The reason His yoke is easy is that He is in the yoke with us—and He is pulling the most. We can slack off and let Him keep the pace. Sometimes His timing frustrates us. We just need to show up and get in His yoke, and He will make us look good cruising at His speed. He takes pleasure in what He can do when a believer is yoked to Him and believing the promise.

God’s Yoke, God’s Timing

I was asked by Pastor Don Cox, to speak in Milford, Ohio one Sunday evening. On our way there, we got into the Express Lane on I -275, going east on the north side of Cincinnati. Two minutes after making that decision, all traffic in this one lane stopped. A concrete wall was on one side and a safety steel girder wall on the other side. My mind kept pulling to get to church, but nothing moved. I was in His yoke, going to church, at His speed.

I watched people get out of their vehicles, stretch as tall as they could trying to find the source of the problem. My mind was pulling on the yoke. Then I saw how vain that was. I quit pulling and relaxed. I released everything into His Hands. He would work everything out.

Finally, the traffic started to move, and we arrived at church only two minutes late. We had a great service. I told about my experience getting there. The song leader told me he had been in the same traffic and had called the church to say he would be late. He was told that Bro. Friend was on his way to speak at church, so he told them to call and tell Bro. Friend not to take the express lane. Too late—I was already on it. We were both stopped in the same traffic without knowing it—both in the yoke with Jesus pulling toward church. We told our story in church. My friend stated the basis for the stall was a taxi with a flat tire. The next time I will remember the yoke and make it easier for myself by allowing Jesus to do the pulling in His time.

So Simple It’s Hard

Matthew 11:29 talks about pulling the load with Jesus. The key to success in this part of our life is simple—don't fight it. Be meek and lowly in heart; perform this in your mind. This is the rest that’s promised.

The load we are pulling is the truth of His word. We are taking His Word to this world in different places. Our trouble is getting it there. It's a tough pull sometimes. We get weary and faint in heart, yet we do not do this alone.

The yoke we take on us is His Word. Our faith continues in that yoke. We pull, believing God will not fail. We can become well experienced at this. When you become good at a task, then it becomes easy to do. It just flows. When yoked to God's Word, we become a good believer. The toil is pleasant. The yoke is easy and the burden light. God's Word cannot fail. How easy can it get? We are yoked to the success of His word.

The key is to want what God wants. Give God what He wants. “I delight to do thy will, O God” should be our slogan.

Allow enough time to do the will of God. Start your day yoked in scripture. It will make your day easy and your burden light. Plan your day around it. Stay yoked to the Word and move at His pace.
