survey sez!
Reader's responses to The Big Question.

The Question: For 18-30 year olds, who's in greater debt--males or females? Why?

The Answer:  “Females, just a guess, but that is what women do--they take care of bums.”

The Answer:  “Males. Why? Females!”

The Answer:  “Whoever has college loans!”

The Answer:  “I would have to guess males because they tend to like the more expensive 'toys.'”

The Answer:  “One would automatically think women, but after working in a bank, I hear more men say that their wives take care of the finances! So maybe males have more debt!”

The Answer:  “Females.  UPC men now watch TV and the gals are playing catch up on shopping to look as good as what men now expect.”

The Answer:  “I would say males, due to the fact that they are viewed to be workers in the field.  No matter what.  And say if half the males decide to get married young?  The financial issues would be greater for those males, as they have to provide for the family and other things.  More than what one desires at a young age.”

The Answer:  “I don't think it's a gender issue. I think a lot of people are in great debt and there are varied reasons why: irresponsible handling of finances (this is what I was most guilty of!), not knowing how to live on your own before getting married (so much harder for two people to live together than just supporting one and it's so hard if your spouse doesn't have the same financial outlook as you), not saving, credit cards, student loans, etc.

Life is much more expensive these days with gas prices so high, food expenses rising. It's harder to have the basics and salaries don't seem to be increasing. It's hard for young people to find stable jobs with good job security (does that exist anymore?) and good salaries; even if they have college educations.

Saving money and living below your means are the only way anyone can make these days.”

The Answer:  “Hmmm...hard to say. Females may shop more, but I think the male's toys cost more.”

The Answer:  “In my experience so far (I'm 25, male), debt hasn't been weighted by gender. I now have $50K in student loans to pay back . . . I think this is probably the greatest source of debt in this age group, for both genders. I also think the guys are as bad as the girls when it comes to credit card debt . . . But that's because young people are equally untrained in money and credit management. I know I was.”
