Finding God in a Cup of Coffee

January 28, 2008

By Elizabeth Long

Sometimes God does small things to show us how much He loves us and to remind us that He is taking care of us.  Today He did just that for me.  It was lunch time, and because it is freezing outside and I'm a little tired today, I was really craving a hot coffee from McDonald's.  I really like their coffee.

I didn't have any cash on me, so I thought I would go to the bank, make a withdrawal, eat my lunch at MickeyD's, and grab a coffee while I was there.

To my dismay, when I drove up to the bank they were closed!  I forgot that it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  I was sad because, since I don't believe in a Debit Card (ha ha), I had no way of getting any cash.

“No big deal!  I'll just drive home to eat lunch.”  But I still had a strong craving for coffee.  When I got home I opened my purse to see how much change I had. Maybe, just maybe, I had enough. But alas!  I only had 70 cents. I think a small coffee costs 95 cents with tax.

I thought surely there would be a few dimes and a nickel lying around the house.  So I did a quick search.  Just when I started to give up, I found 15 cents on the dining table!  Praise God!!!  Now all I needed was a dime.  But there was no more change anywhere!

So I went back to my purse that was sitting on the ironing board in the kitchen.  I decided to count my change just once more.  As I did, I prayed, "Lord, it would be nice if an extra dime would just appear."  And you know what?  As sure as the air I am breathing, a dime that was not there just a few minutes before was sitting next to my purse on the ironing board!  It was such a small thing but it made my afternoon!

The story is not over. When I went through the drive-thru at MickeyD's, I was delighted to see that the coffee was only 85 cents.

You may think, "Well, you wasted your time looking for an extra dime, didn't you?"  No, not at all.  You see, the Lord knew that the coffee was only 85 cents, but He chose to bless me with an extra dime just to show me that He will not only give us exactly enough if we ask Him... but He delights in giving us extra!

This story may seem insignificant to most, but to me it was a very special and sweet thing that the Lord did for me today.  He showed me through a small little answer to prayer that He sees me and He cares.  He is providing my needs, and not only that, He is blessing me with MORE than I need.  "Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over!"

What an AWESOME God!
