Who I Am In Christ

February 11, 2008

By Elizabeth Long

To be like Jesus
To be like Jesus
On earth I long to be like Him
All through life's journey
From earth to Glory
I only ask to be like Him.

I woke up this morning with this song on my lips.  I long to be like Jesus.  There are circumstances and situations in our lives that, if we are not careful, we can allow to dictate who we are.  But we must find our identity in Christ.  For in Him we are new creatures!  Old things are passed away and behold all things are made new!

I know that in my own walk with God, I have struggled with knowing who I am.  I have heard the enemy whisper discouraging lies that I will never be all that God wants me to be, or that I desire to be, because of where I came from.  It's true that I personally did not live a life of sin before I received the Holy Ghost and was baptized.  I was blessed to have been saved at the age of seven.  However, I lived in a world that was full of sin and chaos, parents who were backsliders and siblings who cared nothing for the things of God.

I am not sharing any of this to say, “woe is me.”  But there is a mindset that is engrained in children.  And when they grow up, that mindset will be the driving force that makes them who they are unless there is a divine intervention.  I know I am not the only one who struggles with feelings of inadequacy.  Everyone deals with it in one way or another.

God is not limited to our inabilities or our history.  "He doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called."  So the lies that I am not worthy to be used of God, and that I will never rise above the weights of sin that have held down my family will not prevail.

I can do all things through Christ.  He is my strength!  I know that He's called me and I will not dispute it.  God called Moses to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt.  Moses argued with God and said that he couldn't talk.  He had it in his mind that even God could not help him speak what needed to be said.  Because of Moses' persistence in not feeling adequate, God gave him Aaron to be his mouthpiece. But what would have happened if Moses would have just humbled himself and said, "Lord, you are able to make me into what you want me to be to accomplish your purpose.  Use me as you see fit."

This is my prayer.  "God, I am nothing without you; it's true.  I am not perfect and my background is not desirable, but with You all things are possible.  Make me into what You want me to be.  I will not let the weights of doubt, shame, and fear hinder me.  I will trust You.  I want what You have for me!"
